Bates Life
Candid portraits of everyday student life at Bates CollegeWork Week
“I’ve never been a camp counselor before so dealing with fifteen 8 and 9 year olds, shuffling them from art class to music class to dance class to drama class to pool and back again, helping when they fall or when they quarrel, all sorts of things, I wasn’t necessarily used to doing on such a scale.” Read more as Nora talks about her first week on the job HERE.

Camp Begins
“Two weeks ago, after enjoying several weeks at home in New York, I came back up to Maine to begin my summer job as a camp counselor. It is my third year working up at the camp on the shores of Moose Pond (after 7 years as a camper) and it has been a fun summer so far.” Read on as Paul shares details of his summer so far HERE.

Concerts Continue to Continue/a joyous reunion
“Andrew Bird’s shows are always different than his studio albums because he works with his own talents (he’s a classically trained violinist as well as gifted whistler and guitarist) and loops what he plays, to play over it and create layer upon layer of his own sounds. Kit had never seen him in concert before and was almost in awe of how fantastic of a performer he was. Clearly I have been picking the right shows to see this summer, because, AGAIN, the Boston Globe agrees with me.” Share Nora’s excitement for the Boston summer music scene HERE.

Day One
“As I walked through the Chicago streets during the one full day I had at home, Cape Town already seemed like a distant memory. It just seemed so unreal that I was there a week ago. And now, as I sit in Brooklyn surrounded by friends and family, I feel as if I’ve started a new and familiar chapter of my youth.” Read more as Naima transitions back to American life HERE.

Secondary School
“Looking at the Class of 2009, already graduated and bumming around Winchester, it’s totally weird to think that it’s only been one year. Or that things kept going after my class left… I remember towards the end of my senior year of high school my class was champions and it seemed like everything happening had never happened before; the unity felt by a class that used to never relate, pulling together pranks and other hijinks, and choosing an altogether pretty impressive college list for the coming fall.” Read more as Nora looks realizes it’s “only been one year” HERE.

And Scene
“Somehow, don’t ask me details, I finagled an internship in New York. I will be interning at a casting agency. I’ll be helping to organize casting calls, head shots, recruiting men that appear to be basketball players (the movie focuses on bball), and some administrative stuff. I found a post on Craig’s List for the summer job and couldn’t resist applying. I’ve always been really interested in film, but I focused more on the critical writings on the finished product.” Read more as Naima looks forward to her casting internship as it relates to her Rhetoric major HERE.

Downtime Draaags
“This whole month of June is a sort of vacant month for most of my friends- while all of us have, thank goodness, procured employment for the summer, most jobs dont begin until the last week of June. I’ve been feeling incredibly idle and instead of cleaning my room or writing or doing productive things I’ve been… well.. doing very little.” Read more as Nora enjoys summer downtime HERE.

Moms and Pops
“Even though I know that the live jazz I’ve been loving here is really dope, there’s nothing like having my parents reinforce that belief. Venturing to Cafe Sofia for live jazz and Asoka for some funk infusion proved to be a really great time. Also, the fact that many of the jazz musicians in Cape Town are fairly young (between 20-30) is one of those things that gives a fan of the genre hope for the future.” Naima shares more details about touring around Cape Town with her family HERE.
