Bittersweet

“I got home a few days ago and I realized how much I love and miss Bates. Not only do I miss my friends at Bates, but I miss my daily life at Bates as well. It’s nice to always be with your friends and there is always something to do at Bates. I feel extremely lucky to attend a college that when I am away from it, i truly miss it. The night i got home, a few of my friends came over, who have been home for about a week now and we all reminisced and talked about our college experiences. All of my friends told me how relieved they are to be done with their freshman year and how happy they are that it is summer. Although I am happy to be back in Los Angeles, and I am so happy to see my friends here, I cannot stop thinking about the fun times I had this year at Bates.” Read more about how Charlotte misses Bates after her first year, yet is enjoying her summer home in LA HERE.

End of First Year…

May 28, 2008 · Comments Off

“I can’t believe my first year at Bates is over. The year was incredible. I met tons of new people, learned more than I could have imagined, and took advantage of as many activities and events as was possible. I can’t wait until next year when the college journey continues. Until then check out my new updated ‘Pictures from Bates‘ page which is now more organized and should be much easier to navigate.” Read more as Paul looks back at his first year at Bates HERE.

On to BoCo

May 28, 2008 · Comments Off

“While I’m sure many of the people at Bates right now are pretty bummed short term is ending, I couldn’t be more excited. I can’t wait for my friends from Bates to visit in June, my friends from high school to come home, and for my trip to NYC (where many of my Bates friends are living this summer). While I’ve been having an awesome time during my short term at home, I’m ready for the summer to really get started.” Read more about Naima’s look ahead to summer HERE.

How To Sleep At College

May 28, 2008 · Comments Off

“…Now I had a conversation with a friend about the rules and regulations involving blasting music. On weekdays we agreed on 11. What if one has class at 8 in the morning? 11 is definitely the appropriate time. Weekends, 2 am. Why I’m not quite sure, I guess it just seems appropriate. Sleep at 2, wake at 10, that’s a good 8 hours that still allows one to have productive weekend days…” Read more about Steph’s secrets to a healthy slumber while in college HERE.

Short term coming to an end…

May 28, 2008 · Comments Off

Even though this amazing time is coming to an end I have no regrets. I feel like I took advantage of everything short term had to offer: I went skiing, went to the beach, enjoyed outdoor concerts, took an interesting class, hung out with friends on the quad, went camping, watched fireworks, and relaxed.” Read more about Paul’s love for Short Term and plans for summer HERE.

West Coast Voyage

May 27, 2008 · Comments Off

“My family and I came to LA this week to see my sister graduate from USC’s film school. It’s my second time venturing west of the Mississippi and my first time to California. The graduation was really nice, it was specifically for the film students but that still consisted of at least 500 students. At the time, that didn’t seem like that many kids, but I quickly realized that that is just the people who majored in film. One major - 500 students. That’s wild - at Bates, you get to know the people within your major by the end of your second year. At least in the humanities department, as you get deeper into your major, you know most of the kids in your program.” Read more about Naima’s vacation in Los Angeles HERE.

Home Base!

May 27, 2008 · Comments Off

“…You see, in the beginning of Second Semester, right after I got back from abroad, I decided to apply for a grant, the Phillips Fellowship, through Bates. My plan: to walk el Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage trail that traverses northern Spain. My goal: to understand why a traditionally Catholic pilgrimage has begun to attract pilgrims who don’t identify as Catholics, or even as a particular religion (like myself), yet still walk it…” Read more about Jake’s future plans now that he’s home for the summer HERE.

Working the Clam Bake

May 27, 2008 · Comments Off

“The Clam Bake happens twice a year and is open to the whole campus and is organized ENTIRELY by the vice president of the BOC (Bates Outing Club). The event is entirely student run and though eating lobster on the beach is fun, its also fun to take part in the planning, cooking, and serving. And even though it is “student run”, Bates faculty still shows their support. For instance, last year I played bocce ball on the beach with one of the Deans.” Read more about Graham’s love for Bates’ annual Clam Bake HERE.

Morehouse College

May 19, 2008 · Comments Off

“This fall I will attend Morehouse College on a domestic exchange because I desire an education for liberation. Education for liberation is an educational philosophy that was first introduced by the former President of Tanzania Julius Neyere. Neyere believed that a classical education catered to the interests of the elite and a select few, and discovered that an education for liberation promotes self-reliance, the common good, fairness and equity.” Read more about Anthony’s interest in social justice and the Morehouse/Bates Exchange program HERE
